The Pitch: Like all other kettle chips before them, Lays is selling their kettle-cooked chips on their naturalish-ness. “Natural flavours, timeless taste,” says the bag, which claims the chips are made with all natural flavours, no artificial colours, no preservatives, 0 trans fat, no MSG … and “100% happiness.” Well, if they’ll contribute to my happiness, how can I refuse?
The Look: More thick and curly than standard potato chips, which is normal for kettle-cooked chips. The chips have a bright orange glow, again standard for BBQ-flavoured chips. Unremarkable, really. The packaging looks a bit more refined than a standard chip bag, but the bag is still filled with sliced potatoes fried in oil.
The Taste: Ample seasoning, with a nice blend of sweet, smoky and salty. Lots of crunch, with a texture that makes your jaw do some work. The flavour is similar to every other decent BBQ potato chip out there. Could use more intensity, but otherwise good. Kind of addictive.
